MPs continue labeling journalists

March 31, 2021

Following a series of attacks in the National Assembly of Serbia directed against investigative journalism portal KRIK and the non-governmental organisation CRTA, which was met by turbulent reactions from international organisations, members of the Assembly have nevertheless used parliamentary sessions to continue their campaign against journalists and non-governmental organisations.

The newly formed Coalition for Media Freedom warned about how dangerous it is for public officials to make accusations against journalists, whom they also accuse of cooperation with criminals.

The members of the Coalition for Media Freedom include the Media Association, the Association of Online Media (AOM), the Independent Journalists’ Association of Vojvodina (IJAV), the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS), the Association of Local Independent Media “Local Press” and the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation.

Following recent violent attacks against the KRIK newsroom, to which state institutions did not react, these organisations withdrew from the Working Group for the Security and Protection of Journalists, which the Government of Serbia formed last year.
