Serbian president condemns acquittal verdict in journalist’s murder, while simultaneously accusing and targeting journalists

The Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation has assessed the statement of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić regarding the acquittals for the murder of journalist Slavko Ćuruvija as being hypocritical. Vučić said that the verdict represents a “dreadfully poor message” for everyone who deals with journalism; that it is a great injustice and that it has nothing to do with justice, while at the same time – notes the SĆF – in the same television broadcast, he outlined maps of a “hybrid war against Serbia”, which is allegedly being led by the West, and accuses journalists of betraying the country and working in the interests of foreigners who undermine Serbia.

The Serbian President said verbatim that the media represent “tanks and artillery” in the hybrid war that is allegedly being waged against Serbia.

“Once again, for the umpteenth time, we call on the president and his colleagues to stop targeting journalists in a country where there is absolute impunity for the murders and attempted murders of journalists. Before it’s too late,” stated the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation.

The SĆF noted that, back in 1999, just prior to this journalist’s murder, an article had been featured on state television, and published in newspapers that were under government control, accusing Slavko Ćuruvija with the same tone that is applied to journalists today, accusing him of betraying the country and collaborating with the West, which was then bombing Serbia.
