Ana Pisonero, European Commission: EU regrets that journalist Ćuruvija’s murder remains unpunished after 25 years

February 14, 2024

European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero has stated that the European Union finds it regrettable that the murder of journalist Slavko Ćuruvija still remains unpunished after two and a half decades, which is why she called on the competent institutions to take appropriate steps in order to end impunity for crimes against journalists and to bring perpetrators to justice.

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Teresa Ribeiro, and Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, Jan Braathu, both expressed their dismay over the acquittal.

“The fact that this case still remains unresolved, almost 25 years after this courageous journalist was murdered, is very disturbing. Impunity for this heinous crime is not only extremely painful for Ćuruvija’s family and colleagues, but also deeply disappointing for the whole of Serbian society,” said the OSCE in a statement.

The acquittal of those tried for murdering Ćuruvija was also condemned by many international journalists’ associations, including the European Federation of Journalists, International Federation of Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, International Press Institute, Committee for the Protection Journalists and others.
