Jelena Obucina

House arrest for threatening TV Nova S journalist

April 13, 2023

The Higher Court in Belgrade has passed down a one-year house arrest sentence to N.P. from the town of Veliko Gradište, who was arrested last December for making horrific threats against Jelena Obućina, author of the Dnevnik news bulletin of TV Nova S.

N.P. was convicted for the criminal act of jeopardising Obućina’s security, which otherwise carries a five-year prison sentence. Using direct Twitter messages, he threatened Obučina with “impaling and incineration”.

Obućina said that she was surprised by the speed at which the case was resolved and that the verdict had arrived at an “interesting” moment, adding that she was particularly encouraged because it came at a time when journalists are being subjected to government witch hunts.
