Sandra Gucijan, deputy editor-in-chief of the print edition of pro-government daily newspaper Politika, and Dorotea Čarnić, editor of Politika’s “chronicle” feature, have been declared “redundant” after expressing their support for the student protests against corruption on social media.
Gucijan and Čarnić have confirmed that they are departing Politika and announced that they will consequently initiate legal proceedings.
Similar sackings were recently made at pro-government tabloid newspaper Večernje Novosti, where two female journalists were fired after posting on social media their own photos from the student protests. The reason given for the sackings was similar to the Politika case – attributed to “technological changes”.
Previously state-owned newspapers Politika and Večernje Novosti today have the same owner: Boban Rajić. Rajić has close ties to figures at the top of the Serbian government.
The same reasons have also resulted in the sacking of the editor of Elle Serbia’s web portal.
