Journalists in Serbia being threatened frequently

March 15, 2024

Ana Lalić, journalist and executive director of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Vojvodina (NDNV), has received a series of the worst possible insults and threats that she will be slaughtered in Novi Sad city centre, in response to her publicly stated stance on the construction of a church in Novi Sad. Members of her family also received death threats.

Television N1 journalist Ksenija Pavkov has received dozens of insulting messages and threats to break her bones and slaughter her over her reporting from a protest.

A series of threats and insults were also sent via social media to a journalist of Novi Sad-based radio and portal 021 for the same reason.

The Coalition for Media Freedom, which comprises reputable media organisations and associations of journalists from Serbia, has expressed concern over the threats and the failure of institutions to react, as well as continued impunity for attacks against journalists. The Coalition demands that Serbia’s state authorities immediately uncover and punish all those threatening the safety of journalists.
