Freedom House: Serbia records Europe’s biggest decline in civil liberties

March 4, 2024

According to the latest annual report of New York-based organisation Freedom House, Serbia fell by three points to rank in the top half among countries where democracy has been in constant decline over the last decade.

Civil liberties have been eroding in Serbia for 10 consecutive years, such that this year the country ranks 114th on Freedom House’s Freedom in the World list.

Serbia is also recording the worst decline in Europe as a whole, according to Alexandra Karppi, Freedom House’s expert for the Western Balkans.
