Coalition for Media Freedom formed

May 31, 2021

Six associations and organisations of journalists and media outlets, meeting in the city of Kragujevac, have signed a memorandum of cooperation and formed the Coalition for Media Freedom.

This new alliance of journalists and media outlets comprises the Media Association, the Association of Online Media, the Independent Journalists’ Association of Vojvodina, the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, independent local media association Lokal Pres and the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation.

All six member organisations withdrew in March from the Working Group for the Security and Protection of Journalists, which was established in December 2020 at the initiative of Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, in a sign of protest over the witch-hunt against the editorial board of investigative journalism portal KRIK and in response to the passivity of state bodies.

The newly formed Coalition for Media Freedom stated that it will fight for the respect of professional standards in the protection of freedom of expression and information, and for the rights of journalists in accordance with European conventions.
