The N1 newsroom received a letter in the mail containing threats and a “reminder” of the attack against French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo that resulted in the deaths of 12 employees.
The letter, which was signed by an alleged ‘Serbian patriot’, states that the author is addressing N1 with an appeal to stop “with the anti-Serbian witch hunt and provocative propaganda”. The letter also mentions five of N1’s female journalists by name.
TV N1 notes that this is just a small example of the comments they receive on a daily basis, which constantly include death threats with statements like “you all need to be killed” or “you’ll hang on Terazije”.
This threatening letter to TV N1 represents an escalation of the brutal campaign targeting critical media, which the government has been conducting against such media houses for years, and particularly in recent months, explains the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation.
The SĆF emphasises that, over the course of three weeks, it recorded state officials attacking critical media outlets verbally at least 57 times, accusing them of calling for violence, commanding attacks against the police and inciting physical assaults of political dissidents.
The Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation also notes that President Aleksandar Vučić dubbed the work of journalists of Nova S and N1 “pure terrorism”, calling for them to be arrested.
