{"id":9707,"date":"2024-07-01T13:12:50","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T11:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.slavkocuruvijafondacija.rs\/?p=9707"},"modified":"2024-07-03T13:14:02","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T11:14:02","slug":"slavko-curuvija-foundation-faces-yet-another-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slavkocuruvijafondacija.rs\/en\/slavko-curuvija-foundation-faces-yet-another-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Slavko \u0106uruvija Foundation faces yet another lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>July 1, 2024<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Miroslav Kurak, the second of the four individuals tried for the 1999 murder of journalist and publisher Slavko \u0106uruvija and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in February, has sued the Slavko \u0106uruvija Foundation (S\u0106F) over a statement in which the Foundation expressed that it disagreed with the decision to acquit the defendants.<\/h2>\n<p>This new lawsuit represents continued pressure applied to the Foundation named after the murdered journalist, but also the continued persecution of Slavko \u0106uruvija even a quarter of a century after his murder, announced the S\u0106F.<\/p>\n<p>According to the S\u0106F the ruling once again showed that the state of Serbia isn\u2019t in a position to confront crimes against journalists and represents continued impunity when it comes to the murders of three journalists (Slavko \u0106uruvija, Milan Panti\u0107, Dada Vujasinovi\u0107) that no one has been convicted of killing.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Milan Radonji\u0107, who was serving as head of the Belgrade centre of the State Security Department at the time of the murder and was in charge of monitoring \u0106uruvija right up until the crime was committed, also filed a lawsuit against the foundation on the same grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the murder, \u0106uruvija was being monitored around the clock by 27 secret service agents, yet the crime remained unsolved.<\/p>\n<p>Miroslav Kurak was accused of being the direct perpetrator of the murder. He and Radonji\u0107 are both demanding financial compensation from the S\u0106F for \u201cdamages to their reputation and honour\u201d, i.e. slander.<\/p>\n<p>International organisations that champion the struggle for media freedom \u2013 the International Press Institute, European Federation of Journalists, ARTICLE 19 Europe, OBC Transeuropa and Free Press Unlimited \u2013 have offered their support to the S\u0106F, assessing these two lawsuits as undermining the Foundation\u2019s struggle for justice.<\/p>\n<p>A protest was also lodged by the Journalists\u2019 Association of Serbia, which considers that the community of journalists and media companies \u201chave the right\u201d to feel dissatisfied with the verdict and to express disagreement with the actions of the state and the court in the case of \u0106uruvija\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 1, 2024 Miroslav Kurak, the second of the four individuals tried for the 1999 murder of journalist and publisher Slavko \u0106uruvija and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in February, has sued the Slavko \u0106uruvija Foundation (S\u0106F) over a statement in which the Foundation expressed that it disagreed with the decision to acquit the defendants.
