{"id":5519,"date":"2020-03-31T20:02:29","date_gmt":"2020-03-31T18:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.slavkocuruvijafondacija.rs\/?p=5519"},"modified":"2021-07-21T13:10:25","modified_gmt":"2021-07-21T11:10:25","slug":"state-of-emergency-leads-to-delays-in-appeal-hearings-against-convictions-for-the-murder-of-journalist-slavko-curuvija","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slavkocuruvijafondacija.rs\/en\/state-of-emergency-leads-to-delays-in-appeal-hearings-against-convictions-for-the-murder-of-journalist-slavko-curuvija\/","title":{"rendered":"State of emergency leads to delays in appeal hearings against convictions for the murder of journalist Slavko \u0106uruvija"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March 31, 2020<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The state of emergency and epidemiological situation with the new Corona Virus has led the Belgrade Appellate Court to postpone for two weeks the consideration of appeals against the first instance verdict that convicted four former members of the National Security Service for the murder of Slavko \u0106uruvija, a journalist and owner of the newspapers Dnevni Telegraf and Evropljanin [The Daily Telegraph and The European].<\/h2>\n<p>A four-day hearing to consider appeals filed by both the defence and prosecution was scheduled to take place on 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0March, but all hearings due to take place at the Court of Appeal have been postponed for two weeks. The court will reschedule once the two weeks have elapsed, as at this juncture no one can predict what will happen with the epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>The convictions for \u0106uruvija&#8217;s murder were confirmed on 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0April last year, just days ahead of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the murder, and saw sentences totalling 100 years in prison handed down to Radomir Markovi\u0107, Milan Radonji\u0107, Ratko Romi\u0107 and Miroslav Kurak.<\/p>\n<p>The trial lasted four years, starting on 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0June 2015, and even today \u2013 almost five years afterwards \u2013 it still hasn&#8217;t been completed, with confirmation of the verdict awaiting the decision of the Appellate Court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 31, 2020 The state of emergency and epidemiological situation with the new Corona Virus has led the Belgrade Appellate Court to postpone for two weeks the consideration of appeals against the first instance verdict that convicted four former members of the National Security Service for the murder of Slavko \u0106uruvija, a journalist and owner of the newspapers Dnevni Telegraf and Evropljanin [The Daily Telegraph and The European].
